The hip is one of the largest joints in the human body. It is a synovial and ball-and-socket (or enarthrosis) joint, allowing for a wide range of motion. <\/span><\/p>\n

This joint connects the pelvis to the femur, playing a crucial role in locomotion and body stability during various activities such as walking, running, and jumping.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n

Anatomy<\/h3>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n

Bony Structures:<\/strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n

\u2013 Acetabulum: A cup-shaped cavity located in the hip bone of the pelvis. It forms the concave part of the hip joint and houses the femoral head.
\u2013 Femoral Head: The spherical end of the femur (thigh bone) that articulates with the acetabulum. It forms the convex part of the joint.
\u2013 Femoral Neck: The narrow segment of the femur that connects the head to the diaphysis (shaft) of the bone.
\u2013 Articular Cartilage: Hyaline cartilage covers the articular surfaces of the acetabulum and the femoral head, allowing for smooth movement and reducing friction.
\u2013 Joint Capsule: A thick fibrous capsule envelops the joint, containing synovial fluid that lubricates the joint and nourishes the cartilage.<\/p>\n

Ligaments:<\/strong><\/h3>\n

\u2013 Iliofemoral Ligament: Located at the front of the joint, it is one of the strongest and prevents hyperextension of the hip.<\/p>\n

\u2013 Pubofemoral Ligament: Located at the front and bottom, it limits abduction and extension.<\/p>\n

\u2013 Ischiofemoral Ligament: Located at the back, it limits extension and internal rotation.<\/p>\n

\u2013 Ligament of the Femoral Head (Ligamentum Teres): A small ligament inside the joint, it contributes to stability and carries a small artery that supplies the femoral head.<\/p>\n

Muscles:<\/strong><\/h3>\n

\u2013 Flexor Muscles: The primary flexor muscle is the iliopsoas muscle.
\u2013 Extensor Muscles: The gluteus maximus and hamstrings are the primary extensors.
\u2013 Abductor Muscles: The gluteus medius and gluteus minimus are the primary abductors.
\u2013 Adductor Muscles: The adductor muscles of the thigh, such as the adductor longus, brevis, and magnus, are responsible for adduction.
\u2013 Rotator Muscles: The deep lateral rotators (piriformis, gemelli, obturators) are responsible for external rotation, while the gluteus minimus and medius contribute to internal rotation.<\/p>\n

Blood Supply:<\/strong><\/h3>\n

\u2013 Arteries: The main arteries are the medial and lateral circumflex arteries, which originate from the deep femoral artery. The obturator artery and superior gluteal artery also contribute to the blood supply.
\u2013 Veins: Venous drainage occurs through the circumflex, obturator, and gluteal veins.<\/p>\n

Innervation:<\/strong><\/h3>\n

\u2013 The main nerves are the femoral nerve, the obturator nerve, and the superior and inferior gluteal nerves.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n

Function<\/h3>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n

The hip is essential for body stability and movement. It allows for: <\/p>\n

- Flexion and Extension: Forward and backward movement of the thigh.
- Abduction and Adduction: Movement of the thigh away from and toward the body.
- Internal and External Rotation: Rotation of the thigh inward and outward.
- Circumduction: Circular movement of the thigh.<\/p>\n

The hip also plays a key role in transmitting forces between the trunk and the lower limbs, which is vital for posture, balance, and locomotion.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n
